Hidden among the streets
of the center, through the charming
squares of the districts, in the interlacing of the villages or to outlying suburbs there
is a secret Rome full of lesser-known wonders that
go unnoticed and remain in the
shadow of the most famous second
floor. Here are some:
The "Fountain
of the Turtles" Piazza Mattei,
a short distance from Via Arenula
and the streets of downtown. A little
oasis of calm just a few steps Via Vittorio Emanuele behind ghetto, dominated by Palazzo Mattei erected opposite at the fountain: a delicate embroidery
of marble and bronze, topped with small turtles from which flows the
Acqua Vergine. In Rome, the Aventine
Hill, a pleasant surprise awaits
you just after the Orange Garden
is the gate of the Priory of the Knights of Malta and through the keyhole you can see the most famous and suggestive view of St. Peter.
Looking at it through this slot you can enjoy a fantastic view of the dome of St. Peter's framed
by hedges of the gardens of the Priory. The Piazza
dei Cavalieri di Malta for a boundary wall decorated with neo-classical
obelisks and military trophies, decorations visible on
the architectures are rich
symbols of esoteric
meanings, especially related to Freemasonry. In Peter's Square of
Illyria, dedicated to the founder of the Basilica of Santa Sabina, is the
Orange Garden or Park
Savelli that welcomes visitors with the scowl of
a mask: a fountain by Giacomo della Porta, perhaps depicting Ocean,
entering you will find many orange trees that
give the name to the Garden and
were planted in memory of S. Dominic founded
his monastery here.
Crossing the central avenue you come to the Belvedere and the view from here is
laying on one of the most
beautiful views of Rome and the Tiber since
ancient temples that stood in the Forum Boarium, Santa Maria in retained, Janiculum Hill and imposing, in the distance, the dome
of St. Peter. The route to admire
"Mosaics" in Rome, including the Basilica of
Santa Maria Maggiore, the Basilica of SS. Cosma and Damian (adjacent
holes), the church of Santa Prassede and attached
chapel of San Zeno,
in a short distance church of Santa Pudenziana, San Clemente, Santa Maria in Trastevere,
the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza in the
complex of St. Agnes outside the Walls
in Via Nomentana. The Theatre of Marcellus
is perhaps the oldest theater come down to us. Its construction was begun by Caesar, but completed by Augustus in 11 BC dedicating
it to his late nephew Marcellus. It is
located in the Campus Martius,
between the Tiber and the Capitoline Hill. The Borgo
district is a small district
between the city and the Vatican side of the
Tiber in fact includes way of
conciliation, that in
contrast to what one would assume is not part of the Vatican City and the surrounding areas and Castel Sant'Angelo. The most important monument is the Castel Sant'Angelo, to visit the Church of Santo Spirito in
Sassia a twelfth-century
basilica of Rome with
the bell tower of the '400,
in its interior you can admire
numerous works of art such as the
frescoes in the chapel of the
Nativity with Gonzaga,
the Pietà, the Resurrection.
